But FAB&#8217;s history has seen a few decks choose a different path &#8211; one lined with refrigerators, armor, and stamina to bring the game to a controversial end: fatigue.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fabrec.gg\/articles\/what-to-ask-and-how-to-answer-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your hand&#8217;s value<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine the maximum offensive output you can achieve is typically the first step in deciding which, if any, cards you can use to throw in the way of your opponent&#8217;s attacks. Performing these calculations is essential for nearly every matchup. Particularly in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UTI50ZZQ3-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limited play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, outliving your opponent&#8217;s power cards became a key strategy for FAB&#8217;s inaugural heroes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian of Aria, Bravo became the game&#8217;s first block-heavy hero. With access to plenty of defense reactions and an incredible variety of blue cards that block for three, Bravo was sure to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to Rathe&#8217;s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tank.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Bravo, Showstopper\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Katsu, the Wanderer\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Dash, Inventor Extraordinaire\"><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another hero emerged in the competitive circuit to outshine the <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Anothos\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Anothos<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>-wielding wunderkind, wah-eee-ooo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/16P0Rkx6LizbAoDps_hj51yYZE2qXPj4snz4Py2KTn0o\/edit#heading=h.mm1qiuz1pykj\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turtle Katsu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Flic Flak red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Flic Flak<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and a pair of <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Harmonized Kodachi\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Kodachis<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> helped this Ninja against his heavier-hitting adversaries.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arcane Rising <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought four new classes to the game and another critical piece to the defender&#8217;s toolkit: <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Fate Foreseen red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Fate Foreseen<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. Dash emerged as a long-game contender who could bide her time as she upgraded her <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Teklo Plasma Pistol\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Teklo Plasma Pistol<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and out-valued her battle-worn counterpart.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monarch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Limited proved the utility of fatigue play. But in Classic Constructed, it took some time to see how to slow down the most powerful hero the game had seen to date: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/collisionpoint.blog\/2022\/05\/23\/how-to-play-chane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would take the innovative play of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fabrec.gg\/articles\/author\/tyler-horspool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Horspool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Prism to temporarily put the brakes on the Shadow Runeblade at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fabtcg.com\/articles\/interview-tyler-horspool-winning-calling-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 Calling in Las Vegas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fabtcg.com\/decklists\/tyler-horspool---prism---the-calling-las-vegas-110921\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler&#8217;s deck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically, and Prism&#8217;s Illusionist card pool, generally, showed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flesh and Blood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">players the innovative ways the game&#8217;s mechanics can create defensive value.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, no hero exemplified the tank archetype more than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tales of Aria&#8217;s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> own Oldhim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>Oldhim <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span> the Grandfather of Eternity and Shield of Isenloft<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Oldhim, Grandfather of Eternity\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Oldhim<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> became a staple deck at the same time Michael Hamilton became a household name. It was November 2021. The first US National Championship was in Orlando, Florida, paired alongside a Calling in The Runeblade Era.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Crown of Seeds\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Oldhim, Grandfather of Eternity\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Winter&#8217;s Wail\"><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Briar, Warden of Thorns\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Briar, Warden of Thorns<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Chane, Bound by Shadow\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Chane, Bound by Shadow<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> sat atop the standings at every event in sight, but the players in the Calling weren&#8217;t afraid to go off the assumed meta path. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fabtcg.com\/decklists\/?query=orlando+calling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calling Orlando&#8217;s top 8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three Briars<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Oldhims<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Bravo<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Chane<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Viserai, Rune Blood\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Viserai<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian heroes proved to live up to their high-defense destinies, and Michael Hamilton showed the world that Oldhim was ready to push himself into the top echelon of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flesh and Blood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (you know, until Starvo and then until reaching Living Legend status).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oldhim maintained a high win rate but relatively low attendance throughout his tenure in constructed formats. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Crown of Seeds\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Crown of Seeds<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Winter&#8217;s Wail\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Winter&#8217;s Wail<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> proved to be two of the most powerful equipment pieces ever printed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other hero could cover the litany of damage this Elemental Guardian could. Many players despised Oldhim&#8217;s defensive capabilities, particularly when they were enhanced from Ice talent cards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, fatigue remains a valid tactic today and will continue into the future of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flesh and Blood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>The Current State of Fatigue<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Iyslander, Stormbind\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Teklovossen, Esteemed Magnate\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Riptide, Lurker of the Deep\"><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Lexi, Livewire\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Lexi, Livewire<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> is the reigning queen of the meta. Her onslaught of arrows is hard, but not impossible to outlive. The last remaining Guardian, Bravo, and a variety of Mechanologist decks (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fabrary.net\/decks\/01GDVWMN7X0RFJYX2106F4JS72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treefrog Dash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can fatigue the lithe Ranger, but differently than Oldhim.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a Ranger hero is at the top of the meta, players know that when they run out of arrows, they&#8217;re truly out of threats. While Dash and Bravo can try their best to get to the end of Lexi&#8217;s pile with a handful of health remaining and activate their weapon turn after turn, theoretically, many other heroes could do the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runeblades and Brutes have access to some incredible pieces of armor. Iyslander has ice magic to slow down aggressors. And current limited favorite Teklovossen could assemble enough EVOs to nullify any arrows shot his way.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angelic Prism can create a ward wall to make up for her zero-defense cards and lower health. Assassins can leverage their recyclable armor to block out nasty hit effects while biding their time to find an opening. Riptide is lurking in the dark, setting his traps for a meta to come. A meta beyond the heroes from Aria. A meta promised to be meticulously more balanced for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><strong>The Future of Fatigue<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy Hitters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the horizon as possibly another talentless set, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flesh and Blood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returns to a game balanced between attacking, defending, and interactive permanents on the board.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some classes can block more reliably than others, an increasing array of equipment pieces, block-type cards, and defense reactions will help any hero stay alive longer.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Wax On red\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Spike Pit Trap\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Teklonetic Force Field red\"><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bright Lights,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we received several cards designed just to help block attacks. Some of them even increase their blocking potential if they&#8217;re blocking an attack with overpower, the key evasion mechanic in the set.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The limited set before that, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outsiders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also contained various defensive maneuvers in the form of traps. These protective features allowed for a more dynamic experience in limited and beyond, much like in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to Rathe,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which had generic and class-specific defense reactions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy Hitters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will follow this same trend. It&#8217;s even possible to have a total repeat of the classes represented in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome to Rathe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this gladiatorial combat-themed release (maybe without a Ninja).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Fatigue is likely to become a matchup tactic rather than a full-on tournament strategy. I think this is exactly what LSS intends.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m also willing to bet that our next defense-heavy hero will come from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy Hitters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This time, though, it won&#8217;t be a Guardian. Prepare yourselves for (prediction time) a spear and shield Warrior who will constantly try to stay one step ahead of their opponent by utilizing the reaction step on both sides of combat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of fatigue in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flesh and Blood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looks to be less controlling and more of an even trade of a card for a card as heroes look to rely on their weapons and late-game red attacks to seal the deal.<\/span><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The soup du jour is fatigue.
