However, <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Florian, Rotwood Harbinger\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Florian, Rotwood Harbinger<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> offers a very <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Levia\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Levia<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>-esque playstyle to Runeblades that I am eager to explore in <em>Rosetta<\/em>. Value game plans? Two-card hand all stars? Sign me up!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A First for Hero Powers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Florian\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Florian<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Verdance\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Verdance<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> are the first heroes to have a difference between their young and adult versions. We&#8217;ve seen how the four banish restriction pays off in limited with the World Premier this past weekend, and it proved an adaptable part of his game plan. In games versus other Earth heroes, it was a race to trigger his ability with even blue decompose attacks. Versus Lightning heroes, it was only worth decomposing with red attacks or not at all, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/ylRmj7ASGAQ?si=nOYsPsRO6J6sXXER&amp;t=26376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lucas proved in the finals.<\/a> The big question, though, is how his hero ability will play out in constructed formats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Florian, Rotwood Harbinger\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Runechant\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Embodiment of Earth\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it only duplicates token auras, the main targets are <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Runechant\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Runechant<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>s and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Embodiment of Earth\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Embodiment of Earth<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>s. Yes, you could get crazy with <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Down But Not Out red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Down But Not Out<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, but we&#8217;re only here for a set review, not a Dumpster Dive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Fridge in the Forest<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florian&#8217;s limited weapon is <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Rotwood Reaper\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Rotwood Reaper<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, but that might be where it stays. When you compare it to its purple step-brother <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Nebula Blade\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Nebula Blade<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, Rotwood works better with carry-over Runechant generators like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Sigil of Deadwood\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Sigil of Deadwood<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> or <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Malefic Incantation red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Malefic Incantation<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. However, Nebula can present five value with its hit effect, which at the end of the day is more than Rotwood Reaper. Not to mention, <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Reaping Blade\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Reaping Blade<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>&#8216;s passive is more real than ever with <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Verdance, Thorn of the Rose\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Verdance, Thorn of the Rose<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, and is more flexible as a one-cost. Rotwood is a strong weapon in limited, but I don&#8217;t expect it to be the focus of a constructed Florian deck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Rotwood Reaper\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Barkskin of the Millennium Tree\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Face Purgatory\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Carrion Husk\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Carrion Husk<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, right? Yeah, blocking six sounds great, but what if you could get five to seven value on the regular, and fill the graveyard with an Earth card? Meet <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Barkskin of the Millennium Tree\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Barkskin of the Millennium Tree<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. It&#8217;s always a tough decision to give up <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Fyendal&#8217;s Spring Tunic\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Fyendal&#8217;s Spring Tunic<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, but Florian needs some lasting power to wait for his hero ability and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Embodiment of Earth\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Embodiment of Earth<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>s are just that. This card is amazing early game, but also will create two Embodiments in the late game. Crazy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best art in the set. Probably the best effect in the set. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Face Purgatory\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Face Purgatory<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> lets you block seven to eight for net zero cards. You will redraw and your opponent will discard, so the main punish comes from a poor draw on your end, or if your opponent has the age-old <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Beast Within\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Beast Within<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. This card strictly upgrades the <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Crown of Providence\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Crown of Providence<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> or <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Balance of Justice\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Balance of Justice<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> that was run prior, so make sure to add one to your collection, quick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Reduce, Reuse, Recycle<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decompose is a keyword that helps <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Florian\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Florian<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> get to his hero ability, and also have payoff for playing into banishing Earth cards. Take <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Felling of the Crown\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Felling of the Crown<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Plow Under\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Plow Under<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, for example. Two very strong disruptive pieces that get an attack buff for only <em>four<\/em> Earth cards in banish! These cards kind of do everything. They ramp, they&#8217;re above rate, and they disrupt. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Felling of the Crown\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Felling of the Crown<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> specifically is an all-star since there&#8217;s no way to play around its effect, so it&#8217;s always a two-card eleven.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Felling of the Crown\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Plow Under\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Rootbound Carapace red\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blocking has always been compared to getting go again on every card. If you block, you&#8217;re getting full value from a card with no hoops, it&#8217;s just not going to advance the game state. However, a card like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Rootbound Carapace red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Rootbound Carapace<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> breaks that mold. Not only is it dipping into <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Sink Below red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Sink Below<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> territory of blocking prowess, it also lets you passively build up Florian&#8217;s hero ability without needing to fight over keeping cards. This card is one of the most powerful parts of Florian&#8217;s kit and also unlocks versatility in building Florian towards a one-turn-kill playstyle. Don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;ll take a look at that later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we have more above rate attacks like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Cadaverous Tilling red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Cadaverous Tilling<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> that very clearly serve the decompose cycle: they banish and they&#8217;re Earth cards. They are also unique in that they offer damage faster than <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Felling of the Crown\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Felling of the Crown<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, so I see it being a very foundational part of Florian&#8217;s engine. When you reach constructed and can just add more Cadaverous Tillings and good blues, cards like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Strength of Four Seasons red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Strength of Four Seasons<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> just don&#8217;t compare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tick&#8230; Tick&#8230; Rune!<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As previously mentioned, we need to generate <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Runechant\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Runechant<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>s and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Embodiment of Earth\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Embodiment of Earth<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>s to feel the payoff from Florian&#8217;s hero ability. Lucky for Runeblades, the whole class is built around Runechants. Marry some of that together with new Embodiment support and you&#8217;ve got quite a potent package. A card like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Germinate\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Germinate<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> is the perfect blending of old and new. As Florian&#8217;s specialization, it naturally feeds his gameplan with unique flexibility of dipping into offense or defense. Oh, and it gains life too because why not!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Germinate\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Earth&#8217;s Embrace\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Malefic Incantation red\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also new to this set are meld cards like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Arcane Seeds \/\/ Life\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Arcane Seeds \/\/ Life<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. As a red, you&#8217;re incentivized to play it out as you see it, so it won&#8217;t always get its ceiling of four Runechants with Florian&#8217;s hero ability. Still, it has a baseline value of three, and lets you combo with other life gain effects like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Thistle Bloom \/\/ Life\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Thistle Bloom \/\/ Life<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. Florian gets it easy because these cards cost zero, so there aren&#8217;t many decisions to make about just resolving the left or right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really want to like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Earth&#8217;s Embrace\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s Embrace<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>. It has potential to generate infinite value, but you need to jump through some hoops. Banishing Earth cards is part of Florian&#8217;s modus operandi, but he isn&#8217;t exactly looking to do it every turn, and then you&#8217;d need to constantly be blocking with non-attack actions for the value to matter. Infinite value aside, when you proc this twice with Florian in the late game, it&#8217;s still likely adding four value to your turn. We know <em>Flesh and Blood<\/em> is all about making your three value plays into four, so that sounds pretty good to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahh, then there&#8217;s my preview card. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Malefic Incantation red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Malefic Incantation<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> will find its home in so many Runeblades. In <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Vynnset\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Vynnset<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> it&#8217;ll help use runegate. In <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Viserai\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Viserai<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> it&#8217;s another zero-cost non-attack to enable his large hands. In <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Florian\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Florian<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> it&#8217;s simply six points of damage with his hero power. Yes, a one-card six! As you can see, there&#8217;s a trend of Florian&#8217;s hero ability absolutely busting the rate of both offense and defense which has been a telltale sign of the best decks of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Real Dread Tryptic<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runeblade majestics did not disappoint in this set. I don&#8217;t think Florian will make the best use of this trio, but <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Snuff Out\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Snuff Out<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Succumb to Temptation\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Succumb to Temptation<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Machinations of Dominion\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Machinations of Dominion<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> are incredible tools for deck building Runeblade play patterns. Hit effects and more go again are just&#8230;the best thing ever? It&#8217;s like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Mauvrion Skies blue\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Mauvrion Skies<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Consuming Volition red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Consuming Volition<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Rattle Bones\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Rattle Bones<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> had a family reunion. If you enjoy playing <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Viserai, Rune Blood\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Viserai, Rune Blood<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> after this set&#8230; I kind of don&#8217;t blame you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"edhrecp__cards\"><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Snuff Out\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Succumb to Temptation\"><\/div><div class=\"edhrecp__card-container\" name=\"Machinations of Dominion\"><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another thing Runeblades like to explore are OTK strategies. Florian doesn&#8217;t seem to be any different. Cards like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Sigil of Deadwood\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Sigil of Deadwood<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Haunting Rendition\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Haunting Rendition<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> provide extra Runechant generation that Florian&#8217;s hero power will help supplement. Add those on top of <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Scepter of Pain\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Scepter of Pain<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Read the Runes red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Read the Runes<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Runeblood Incantation red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Runeblood Incantation<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, and you&#8217;ll have a deck capable of generating more Runechants than your opponent&#8217;s entire life total. This kind of passive deck can use <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Rootbound Carapace red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Rootbound Carapace<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Sow Tomorrow blue\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Sow Tomorrow<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> to great effect to continue to banish Earth cards without prematurely sending your stack of &#8216;chants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>All Things Must End<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alright, let&#8217;s wrap this up with some honorable mentions. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Hit the High Notes red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Hit the High Notes<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> once again might not make it into Florian, but the great rate and cost are delicious for Runeblades. <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Earth Form red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Earth Form<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> is a great hit effect that threatens double Embodiment with Florian, but competes with other three-for-seven slots like <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Splintering Deadwood red\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Splintering Deadwood<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> that could double a Runechant instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that should do it! I&#8217;ve already seen some tier lists claiming <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Florian, Rotwood Harbinger\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Florian, Rotwood Harbinger<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span> is S-Tier, and I would kind of love a meta where that is the case. Florian has one beyond broken card in <span class=\"edhrecp__link\"><a class=\"edhrecp__link-a\" content=\"Felling of the Crown\"href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\">Felling of the Crown<\/a><span class=\"edhrecp__link-image\"><\/span><\/span>, but the rest of what he does is just very high value gameplay.
